Cancer and a Slovenian girl

The following poem was written by a Slovenian teenage girl, dying of cancer.  The poem speaks of herself.  Please, let it make its rounds.  I’m sending it exactly as I received it…and have translated it for you.  Her doctor released it.

Počasni ples (prosti prevod)

Ali si kdaj opazoval otroke na vrtiljaku?
Ali poslušal šum dežja,
ko pade na tla?
Ali si kdaj sledil neenakomernemu
prhutanju metuljevih kril?
Ali opazoval sonce,
ko izginja v noč?
Bolje bi bilo, ko bi upočasnil.
Ne pleši tako hitro.
Čas je kratek.
Glasba ne bo trajala.
Preživiš vsak dan v letu?
Ali počakaš na odgovor,
kadar vprašaš “kako si”?
Ko se dan bliža h koncu,
ali se zlekneš na posteljo
z na stotine novih vprašanj,
ki ti rojijo po glavi?
Bolje bi bilo, ko bi upočasnil.
Ne pleši tako hitro.
Čas je kratek.
Glasba ne bo trajala.
Ali si kdaj rekel svojemu otroku,
“to bova napravila jutri”,
ne da bi v naglici opazil
njegovega razočaranja?
Ali nisi izgubil stika
z dobrim prijateljem,
samo zato, ker ga nikoli nisi utegnil
poklicati in reči “Ciao”?
Bolje bi bilo, ko bi upočasnil.
Ne pleši tako hitro.
Čas je kratek.
Glasba ne bo trajala.
V silni ihti,
da bi nekam prišel,
se ne utegneš veseliti, da sploh lahko greš.
Ko si zaskrbljen in cel dan hitiš,
je kot bi nikoli ne odprl darila . . .
Vržen proč.
Življenje ni tekma.
Upočasni.
Poslušaj glasbo.

Slow Dance (free verse)

Have you ever watched children on a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the noise of the rain,
falling on the ground?
Or have you ever tracked the crooked path
of a fluttering butterfly’s wings?

Or watched the sun,
when it disappears into the night?
Better would it be, if you slowed down.
Don’t dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won’t last.
Do you live every day of the year?
Do you wait for an answer,
when you ask, “How are you?”
When day nears its end,
do you brood on your bed
with hundreds of new questions
whirling in the head?
Better would it be, if you slowed down.
Don’t dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won’t last.
Did you ever tell your children,
“we’ll do that tomorrow”,
without noticing in your haste
his disappointment?
Did you not lose touch
with good friends,
only because, you never took
the time to call and say, “Ciao”?
Better would it be, if you slowed down.
Don’t dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won’t last.
In the midst of angry sobbing
to get somewhere,
you don’t stop to rejoice,
that you can actually do so.
When you are worried and rush around all day,
It’s as if you would never open your gifts…
thrown away.
Life is not a competition.
Slow down.
Listen to the music.

Please send this to everyone you know.  Maybe even those you don’t know.  This is the wish of a special young girl, who because of cancer will soon depart this world.  She still has a few months to live and she expressed her great wish that she sends this poem and with it tell everyone to live life to the fullest, even though for her it is impossible.

MAY YOUR DAY BE HAPPY!

This is the poem I wrote in reply-it was instant inspiration.

Zalostne solze skupaj trescejo.                                  Sad tears crash together.
Nimam pojma kedaj potecejo.                                   I have no idea when they will run out.
Kmalu prihaja dan tisti dan                                       Soon comes the day of that day
ko bo zopet zivlenje naprej,                                        when life will again go ahead,
in nazaj pogled bo tih.                                                 and the look back will be quiet.
Ljube bom cakala                                                         Loved ones I will wait for
v srcu in tih.                                                                   in my heart and quiet.
Naprej bo ples                                                               The dance continues                                       in solze v tih.                                                                  and tears into silence.
